MANIPULATING HISTORY
An article in Amharic Ketarik Yemayimaru Andand Kentuwoch
By Mathza
Yilma Begashaw appeared on EthioLion on 10/21/06.
The writer accuses Kasa (later Emperor Yohannes IV) of Tigray and
Worqit of Lasta of guiding and supplying with provisions the British expedition
to Meqdela. He, however, intentionally hid the role Emmye Menelik had eagerly
wanted to play. King Menelik wrote to Napier leading the expedition: “I was first
willing to send (supplies) to you in a suitable manner, but my enemies
are between us… Now I am far off, but I have no hesitation (to help).”
The author of the above mentioned article is typical of many authors
who have written books about and articles related to Ethiopian history. At
best they minimize and at worst completely ignore the roles played and
accomplishments by non-Shewan, particularly Tigrayan, leaders and
exaggerate the greatness of Shewan kings, emperors and their cohorts.
Despite the many historical mistakes committed by Emperor Menelik II,
the history books have done a great job slumbering into a deep state of
amnesia in reference to his failures. Because of this, most Ethiopians are
misinformed with respect to their history. The history books written by
Ethiopians have purposely avoided recording the many betrayal of his
country. These include siding, on his own initiatives, with all of
Ethiopia’s enemies at the time (Egypt, Italy and the Mahdists) and
against Emperor Yohannes IV who was defending the country from these foreign
aggressors. Menelik’s transgressions during this period of time are
primarily responsible for all the problems associated between Eritrea
and Ethiopia today.
